Leading of sympathic culture for 21 Century
YAMADA SOHEN
  ● SOHENRYU ●
Sohenryu is a systematized school originated by So. We take joy at pleasing people from all over the world by providing superb hospitality. By placing forward excellent tea culture, we conduct sophisticated tea ceremony in a way to naturally accomplish the spirit of "wabi", which was conveyed by Rikyu's grandson Sotan and was directly passed down from Rikyu. In Sohenryu we understand that "wabi" is "being honest, prudent and not being arrogant", according with the idea of Rikyu's master, Zyo-ou. We guide pupils to express "sama" in our ordinary behaviour and encourage them to devote themselves to associate with others using the spirit of "makoto" or "sincerity". In short, we seek for the true meaning of the tea ceremony in modern times. The purpose of Sohenryu is to be a leader of the spiritual culture in the 21st Century, based on the authenticity originated and established by So. Through the severe practice of the mind originated from Zen, pupils are required to form a noble personality and dignity. Furthermore, all the pupils need to be capable of conducting tea ceremony.

The school of Sohenryu was originated by So Yamada (1627 - 1708), the best pupil of Sen Sotan, grandson of Sen no Rikyu. So is widely known as a great tea master, who learned and succeded the idea of simple and true "wabi-cha" directly passed down from Sotan in the early Edo period. As a messenger of Rikyu's spirit of "wabi-cha", we ask modern times people to stop misusing energy on excessive thought, and at the same time, we encourage them to think simply and clearly. In tea ceremony, our goal is that both masters and guests encounter each other at heart and become one by enjoying every moment of life. Which means to find aesthetics in how masters and guests behave and encounter each other with sincerity in the perfect tea ceremony style.

The "Chakyo" or "tea space" of Jomyo-ji temple in Kamakura was created based on the plan of our former head master Yomo Saisyu. The "Chakyo" stands out in a cedar grove facing a beautifully curved waterside of the upper Name river.
